On Sunday, Aug. 15th, 1968, Walt & Iva Thompson announced the Grand Opening of the 'Driftwood Travel Trailer Retreat'. It featured 'Drive Thru Spaces, Laundry Facilities, a Recreation Room and All Electrical & Sanitary Hook-ups'.

The ad that ran in the local paper that day (the 'Pilot') announced the 'Grand Opening Celebration', and there was 'Free Coffee and Cookies', a 'Tour of the Grounds' and a 'Trail to the Beach'. What a day!

Also featured were 'Aloha Camp Trailers and Caravelle Campers, shown by Chetco Motors Co., Inc.'

A lot has changed since 1968 and we now have a bit more than just a 'Trail to the Beach'. See our 'Take A Tour' page for proof.

The original map (as printed in the Pilot) to the 'Driftwood Travel Trailer Retreat' can be viewed on the 'Original Map' tab. We've updated it a bit since then (see our 'Find Us' page).

The Thompson family has owned, operated and managed the RV Park throughout its 40+ continuous years of existence. Founded by Walt & Iva Thompson in 1968, their son Roger took over as General Manager and Owner in 1998.

The long history of family ownership and community involvement has made the Thompson family an integral part of the history of Brookings-Harbor, and their involvment continues to this day.

A native Oregonian and Veteran, Roger has been heavily involved in community activities and various organizations, including but not limited to;

  • Board member of the Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce for 9 years.
  • Water Shed Councel board member for 12 years and 3 years as President.
  • Slam'n Salmon board member since its inception.
  • 2005 Volunteer of the Year
  • Fisheries Committee Member
  • Member of the CA/OR Derby
  • Southern Oregon Kite Festival Committee Member and co-Chair for 4 years
  • Oregon RV Park & Campground Association Founding Board Member and past President

Roger is also responsible for Driftwood RV Park being among the first 100 RV parks in the US to offer Wi-Fi Internet connectivity, in addition to nearly continuous and extensive upgrades and improvements throughout the park's history. In his spare time (like he has any), Roger loves to fish.

In 2010, Roger Thompson was awarded the CPO (Certified Park Operator) designation.

Roger L. Thompson

Owner & General Manager

Originally hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Angi earned her AA degree in Accounting and moved to Oregon in 1992. She started working with Roger at the Driftwood RV Park in 2006 and eventually became a full-time employee.

Angi is responsible for most of the day-to-day operations and activities at the park, including making reservations, registering guests, helping them park their RVs, managing the office, accounting tasks, paying the bills, mailings, inventory management, keeping Roger in line and generally making sure everything runs smoothly. Angi does it all.

Angi is also the creator of the quilts that she donates to the Southern Oregon Kite Festival each year, which helps defer the cost of putting on the festival.

Angi is currently enrolled in the 'Certified Park Operator' (CPO) program. She is also a full-time resident of Driftwood RV Park, as is Roger, and is nearly always on-site.

Angi is also active in the community and is a past member of the Southern Oregon Kite Festival committee, the Azeala Quilt Guild and is heavily involved in the Slam'n Salmon Ocean Derby.

What is a 'Certified Park Operator' or CPO?

The CPO designation is awarded by the 'National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds' (ARVC), and is the only such professional designation in the leisure, recreation, entertainment and park industry. In order to receive this designation, a park operator must obtain a combination of course and equivalency credits, by taking courses, attending seminars and by obtaining hands-on experience, working in a park.

The CPO designation is a distinguished honor accorded to Campground and RV Park operators and managers who demonstrate their efforts by improving themselves, their parks, and their services, for the betterment of the Camping and RVing Industry and while enhancing their guest's experience.

The importance of the 'Certified Park Operator' Program

The 'Certified Park Operator' (CPO) program offers park operators and staff the opportunity to earn the highest professional designation possible in the RV Park and Campground Industry. The CPO designation earns individuals the respect of their fellow professionals and industry leaders, and provides a standard of excellence in employment and an accepted legal and ethical benchmark for "best practices".

Furthermore, the CPO designation listed in some of the most well read and prestigious national campground directories, helps consumers identify those parks that are operating with the most recent technology, best business practices and who maintains the highest possible criteria, using cutting edge information.

Whether it's a plaque on the wall near the guest registration desk or the designation of "CPO" on business cards or brochures, "This park is owned and operated by a Certified Park Operator", means that you're assured of the best possible facilities and services available in the industry.

Tents for Troops

T4T

"Tents for Troops" is a National Organization that encourages campgrounds and RV Parks to support our troops, by donating two sites for two nights to Active Duty Military personel. This program allows us to "give back" to those men and women serving in our armed forces, for all their hard work and dedication to defending our Nation and our way of life.

In 2011, Driftwood RV Park became a proud member of the "Tents for Troops" organization. If you or a member of your family are currently on Active Duty and would like to stay at Driftwood RV Park, please contact us by phone or via our 'Stay With Us' page, for availability of sites and to allow us to repay your service in our small way.
